referrer spam
this is pretty cool. not being a web weenie, and not checking my stats lately because i’m not blogging as much, i finally got around to paying attention to the obviously wrong results that have been leaking into my site stats for about 6 months. was just going to describe it briefly and call it “referrer spam”, but figured that phrase was worth a google. yep, it’s an official term (makes sense), and it describes what i noticed.
basically, sites are fake linking into my domain to, among other things, attract attention when i read my stats. doesn’t bother me as much as it does some of the people i’ve read on the subject tonight, but i’m also not running a business off the information. easy to ignore with my light traffic.
there are some crazy sites out there! did you know that there are people who have mixed up naughty bits?
[050221 update: in this post i made the common mistake of assuming most of this spam was intended primarily for me, though i did know about its other role — one which now seems perhaps to be the sole purpose: raising search engine page rank by faking links on pages (albeit stat pages) of many different parties on the internet. local status update here.]

I’ve just been wondering about a good traffic analysis program. Got any recommendations? Thanks, SweetiePig!

Glad you’re amused, but I’m hardly a web goddess. Besides, you have a stats program and I don’t …
