TV on a laptop

a friend just mentioned to me that he was going to buy a small TV/DVD combo. since laptops w/DVD start around $700, i suggested that and looked into it for him.

haven’t shopped for a computer for years, but i was surprised that apparently nobody is offering a sub-$1000 laptop with DVD and an okay TV tuner (w/coax input). what the hell? a guy at dell told me that a notebook with good DVD playback would be around $700, but the lowest model with that plus a TV tuner would be around $1400. i don’t get that. i’ve seen several TV tuner cards with good reviews starting below $100. they can’t slap that in a notebook and sell it for under $1000? nobody wants it?

i’m not asking to record TV or burn DVDs, just to watch ‘em. the guy at dell swore that it couldn’t be done with good quality for less than $1400. i think he’s full of it.

somebody knows something about this i’m missing, please shout.
