heavenly creatures
oh sure, there are all sorts of great moments in cinematic history — shots. angles. subjects.
saltypig says gimme this one:
LMAO
but seriously. this crumpet goes on my short list of tasty film perfection. and i confess that i have a thing for kate winslet. a major, warped thing. melanie lynskey? almost as strong, though she’s necessarily somewhat unattractive in heavenly creatures, more attitudinally than visually. what a great job they both did in this film, the first for both of them. kate had done some TV, but i think melanie was a complete newbie. you’d never know it. twisted, twisted cinema, but only too true to life. i’ve researched the real characters HC was based on, and though it’s fantastic, the essential facts are aligned with history.
but i didn’t mean for this to turn into a heavenly creatures analysis. there are plenty of those on the web, and i recommend a good visit after you see the film. NOTE: if you can manage it, do not rent anything but the 2002 american DVD. if the picture comes up in 4:3 (TV) ratio. turn it off and take it back to the store. beside missing half the image, enjoyable and worthwhile scenes are cut. don’t do it!
anyway, please savor these random tasties from the film. recognize the bum accosted by kate? he can afford better clothes now, being the director of LOTR (and HC), a then almost unknown peter jackson. petey, ya done good.
