boxing nirvana

looks like i’ve settled into an acceptable arrangement for my boxing instruction. took a class today that, happily, wasn’t the retarded apoplexy served up by the jerkoff goifs at LA boxing. classes aren’t as good as private instruction, but this’ll work just fine, considering the personalities of the class and the instructors.

i’d really be set if today’s instructor were the permanent one. guess i have a strong (but not delusional) crush on a kick-boxing babe. wow! what a honey. never realized how sexy it is to interact with a woman who could beat the shit out of me. laugh oh, she’s a sweetie. don’t know how old she is, if she’s married or whatever, but i couldn’t care less. very nice to just be in the same room as she does her thing. will never amount to anything more than a few words exchanged here and there, though it was her friendliness that invited me to the class when i happened to run into her and her trainer in the boxing room at my new gym. don’t know who the dude was (older than her), but both were damned helpful and interested in helping a newbie, even though she’s a highly-ranked amateur (so i heard from another student today).

as you may know, boxing is called “the sweet science” by aficionados. i thought it was a little overkill, but the more i get into this sport, the more i’m thinking it is exactly that. you don’t know until you feel it from within. my punches are getting stronger, and it looks like the superior form instilled by my first instructor (now fired) held even through the lame-ass test session at LA boxing (bleh!), which i feared threatened to erase what i’d learned before. my left jab and straight right are coming along nicely, and i’ve been known to throw a mildly convincing left hook. my partner today is an experienced kick-boxer, and he noted that my punches were pretty good for my limited training. cool! i know he wasn’t bullshitting so much, because he didn’t comment until i was about 15 punches in and had improved enough even for me to notice.

do you have the slightest inclination to try boxing? do it. can’t think of a better fitness regimen than boxing every other day, with standard weight circuits and cardio on the off days. they almost don’t mix at all, leaving a solid balance. give me a couple of months, and i’m gonna be one hard-body, badass MFer. they don’t want me to spar for a long time, but i’ll weasel my way around that.
