the drill — get to know it

“Normally the Iraqis know the drill … if something happens … get down, hands up … They started to take off, so I shot at them,” he said.

~US marine staff sergeant frank “do the right thing” wuterich, explaining how he ended up in a foreign country, shooting and killing native residents for not following his orders assumptions.

sound crazy? only because you haven’t heard the full explanation. from drudge:

Pelley asks Wuterich how running away from the scene could have constituted hostile intent. He replies that he thought they may have detonated the roadside bomb. He adds, “But also at the same time, there were military-aged males that were inside that car. The only vehicle, the only thing that was out, that was Iraqi, was them. They were 100 meters away from that IED. [...]“

and so were you, murderer wuterich.

“[...] Those are the things that went through my mind before I pulled the trigger. That was positive identification,” Wuterich tells Pelley.

notice that all these stories ultimately rely on the nuremberg defense? order following. he was “ordered” to go to iraq and be a murderous hooligan. therefore, all observers are to suspend rational judgment.

these wastes of flesh should be treated as any other murderer, and the string pullers (cheney/bush cabal) should embrace for themselves the same logic that put charles manson in prison for murders executed by others. no, charles manson wasn’t in the white house while his lackeys hooliganized in blood, but, like cheney et al (on the record), he didn’t directly kill anybody either that he was convicted for.

i don’t recall the nuremberg defense holding up for the “HEALTER SKELTER” troops.

here’s one that won’t make the cbs evening news: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-5587990522549547050

my 9 yr old son is enamored by the military. this will be on his playlist tonight.

    fuck.

monk, i watched that whole vid. do you believe everything he said? i had a vibe that he was being manipulated into some of that. do you believe there’s systematic, direct (bullet by bullet) slaughter of children, etc? mass graves and burnings?

not saying it’s impossible, but i don’t trust this guy, despite the obvious truth of much of what he says. what do you think?

my take is the dude’s fucked up. the stutter is real, the stories seem real to a point and i believe he truly is haunted.

with that, i had some flags pop up as i watched it–some of the phrases he used, especially when he wasn’t telling about his personal involvement, seemed scripted or rehearsed.

total speculation here…anti-war film maker finds iraq vet with ptsd issues who is willing to speak out against the war. they meet, discuss, meet… time to film, “we’ll just ask you questions and talk like we have been, don’t worry, we can fix it in the post-edit.” edited to fit preconceived result.

they would have done better to have him tell his story about the boot camp/arrival briefing dichotomy, his personal involvement & eyewitness accounts, the issues he now has to live with for the duration, and any remorse he has.

would have had more impact and a less “produced” vibe.

    p.s.

it’s hard to imagine he was involved in all of those aspects (mass grave account, burning bodies, mosque slaughter…). i can’t say it reeks of a performance, more likely they took his story and used him to tell their story.

who would have believed abu ghraib without the pics?

“who would have believed abu ghraib without the pics?”

i wouldn’t have disbelieved it. i’m actively skeptical though of allegations of widespread, public, direct (not from cozy offices at altitude) killing as he described. not saying it didn’t happen, but i’m wondering why his account is the first such claim i’ve heard. wondering why mass graves haven’t been exposed; would be a significant story.

don’t have a problem with the dude stuttering, and i know much of what he described fits, but my years behind a vid cam tell me this guy was massaged before and during the taping. very much like an over prepared witness in court. they screwed up on this, i think. bummer, because the guy’s story could have been very powerful. this approach tends to null (or worse) anything he might say afterward.
