good food from target
just passed my 3-month mark after converting to veganism. though it hasn’t been without aggravation, including a spot about one month in where i thought my drastic lapse in energy would lead me to start eating animal products again, some things have made it pleasurable. i’ve written about amy’s frozen food, and how great that is. this post is about target’s food brand, archer farms, available at SuperTarget. mmmmm mmmmmmm! you might expect the store brand from a walmart type place to be ultra shitty, but some of these salsas and pasta sauces i’d be happy eating in a fancy restaurant, at fancy restaurant prices. even their dried pasta’s highbrow, and packaged as if from a gourmet store.
before i went vegan, i was buying archer farms pizzas by the basket. it’s these sauces i’m flipping over now. the other day i was working on the computer and didn’t feel like running to the store for pasta, so i just opened a jar of archer farms arrabbiata pasta sauce and started eating it with a spoon. kept pouring out a little more, until the whole jar was empty. far from that usual ragu brand bullshit, these sauces have good tomato chunks and a homemade consistency. having made marinara sauce from scratch for many years, i know basic ingredients when i taste ‘em. as always i could go for less sugar and salt in almost everything, but these still kick.
one of my favorite meals now is an amy’s burrito — which target sells at about half the standard grocery store price — with a slathering of chipotle salsa or a big swamp of arrabbiata sauce. top with some fresh ground pepper and maybe a little italian seasoning; that’s good eatin’ there.
also, target’s a good place to get delicious chocolate soy or almond milk, which is apparently one of the items that’s helped me transition from lifeless vegan sloth to energetic boxer boy (vitamin fortified), and makes a damned good dessert. love that gritty carob-style chocolaty flavor. hell, i’ve even started to investigate the ladies again, which must mean i have far too much energy, since everyone knows dallying with ladies is hazardous and foolhardy.
one more thing. if you’re into robust fruit preserves (which i eat with peanut butter on wasa crackers for dessert, and sometimes a meal), you gotta check out black raspberry from st dalfour, which i buy at a local chain called shoppers food warehouse. can’t find a link for the black raspberry, but it’s probably the only preserves with significant amounts of real, whole berries. so tasty. if the jar sits upright for a while, all the berries rise to the top. those are some primo meals, picking those off in one go. of course, it leaves the rest of the jar with the normal fruitless jelly of so many other brands, but what a glorious time you had, what? cheerio, fuckers!
