vegan sandwich

guess i’m officially a vegan now, since i bought my first avocado at the grocery store yesterday. here’s an easy sandwich i like, taking a break from the usual salad feast:

  • thickly sliced crusty bread (italian, artisan whatever)
  • tomato
  • cucumber (sliced in flats)
  • red onion
  • field greens
  • avocado
  • hummus (only cedar’s for me — preferably their “original hommus tahini”)
  • italian dressing (just a little mixed with the hummus)
  • fresh ground pepper
  • italian seasoning

it’s often a pain in the ass to certify that prepared foods are vegan. after finding a link for this post, i suspect that wish-bone robusto italian, the italian dressing i just bought 5 bottles of on sale, has animal product(s) in it (in the usual “natural flavors” pile). “cheese flavors”? WTF. had no idea. funny how vegans hope for such things to be artificial. can it be accurately concluded that if the cheese flavor written about on the site’s tucked into the “natural flavors”, that it really is natural (i.e., derived from cheese)? maybe it’s not required to be listed at all. maybe the cheese flavor is from natural flavor that isn’t cheese. laugh i suspect that within 10 years “vegan” will be common on labels, though right now that may be the kiss of death for many products; in my omnivore state i’d have avoided anything labeled vegan.
