the eBay flip

plenty of people are talking about this bottle of beer on eBay, with a supposed bid now of US $503,200.00. i predict he won’t get anywhere near that after the buzzer rings tonight; generally, nobody with his brain installed straight would participate in an eBay auction like this where the bidders aren’t pre-screened (which it appears to not be, though i may have missed a change in eBay protocol). here’s the kicker though:

the owner bought that bottle of beer on eBay back in june, and you can still see the auction: US $304.00, and 20 for shipping. assuming the item sold even in the $20,000 range, imagine how pissed the june seller must be. yikes.

marketers and economics writers should be tracking this sale. so much to study and learn if it goes for many thousands. something tells me there will be socialist fools throwing around the buzzterm “imperfect information” on this, assuming the sale sticks. alleged correspondence with the current owner:

I emailed the seller and asked the following question:

“A nice piece of history indeed. Is this the same bottle that was sold/purchased on 21 June 07 on EBay for $304? Item number 270132264843, or a different bottle? Thank you.”

This is the response I got back:

“Same, but do not harass the seller, its childish, he has already been hit with over 200 msg. I am not saying you will, but I am sure you can understand his frustrations.
Regards”

UPDATE 01:

that’ll be an interesting one to follow up on in a few weeks.

UPDATE 02:
appears sale didn’t go through.
