the future of traffic

the future of traffic

what a lesson in stupidity to watch this video (youtube of course) then read the comments. what's pictured is, on the surface, arguably superior to any american intersection i've seen in any city, yet the comments are overwhelmingly oblivious, and often derisive. yeah, the road design and routing is probably inferior, but watch how the longest jam (rare) is about 15 seconds. as one aware commenter noted, it's like foot traffic in a mall, with vehicles.

i love the video because it comes close to what i see as a possible solution to red lights — a system where onboard computers are given temporary control of the car and all traffic is interleaved — ideal for private, commercial roads where vehicles and drivers are certified to voluntary standards (i.e., potentially much higher than the shit state roads).

or, just fuck the computers; obviously, interleaving is being done manually, and apparently successfully enough — a quick visual demo of spontaneous order. coincidence that americans typically hate this sort of thing? they'd rather have red light cameras, handcuffs, and apple pie.

they'll find out one day. or die.

Private roads are great (I wish I had an account over here so I wouldn't have to post comments on here annon) but I really think the idea of private roads would be fantastic. I think it's more psychological than profit wise; of course they would be more efficient at what they do than public roads, but if Americans could see how much safer, easier, and better they are than public ones...

Well, that could lead to something else. :+)

private wherever possible, which is almost everywhere. you're right; one thing leads to another!
