Ugly Betty DVDs

Ugly Betty DVDgot sorta burned out on Ugly Betty after seeing 5 or 6 episodes online, but i happened to be in Target the day the season 1 DVD was released, and picked it up.

this is a show that gets better the more you watch and pay attention. i missed out by skipping episodes online (the only way it was offered); much better to see them all. the DVDs are done well too. i know it's supposed to be forbidden to praise popular shows, but damn if UB doesn't slam home some great stuff. the music, writing, camera work, set design, CGI, and — especially — the actors are doubleplus good. this show shares plenty with the TV work of david lynch (On the Air, and a little bit of Twin Peaks), and even reminds me of Arrested Development. they do some juxtaposed/intercut scenes that'll blow you away if you take the time to get into the show and let them find you.

probably the most surprising thing from watching the DVDs is how much i dig the pairing of marc st. james (maybe the best gay character in film/TV history) and amanda tanen (becki newton, a seemingly conventional, ignorable blond who's taken that part and slammed it into afterburner; won't be surprised if i'm soon dreaming of becki newton). with wilhelmina slater (vanessa williams) cracking the whip on them, and fabia (gina gershon) kicking her ass...

okay, i'll stop soon, but only after naming what is perhaps the most stunning piece of gorgeously big ass and femininity to bless TV in many years: hilda suarez, played by ana ortiz. yikes! if she doesn't convert you to the school of bunkie junkie, you're either a woman or an unsexed/missexed dude. lord almighty, but ana ortiz, ...

never mind. just look:

the show doesn't flinch from showing her and other tasties, nor using some robust language/subjects for prime time TV. (does it get more genius than bringing in an unnamed scumbag actress to share a lesbo kiss with her former boyfriend, now a tranny played by rebecca romijn?) Along with the fun, it's mastered exactly how to get serious on a campy show. never feels maudlin, and always goes straight back to the stupid. don't even think of skyping me, bitch, because i could talk about ugly betty for an hour or so, easily.

Hey, just had to check in, UC. FYI, Ugly Betty is Charlotte's favorite show, she and her dad always try to sit down (just the two of them) and watch. Maybe I should pay more attention, but I let them have their time together.

Miss ya'
