two movies i like

when at a theater looking for a movie yesterday, i was slightly predisposed to select and like Superbad. i knew it starred michael cera, an exceptional teen actor from one of my fave TV shows, but that was about it. it was enough. within the first 30 seconds of the credits i was on board with this unapologetic homage to the 70s, transmuted to today. not perfect, but never imperfect enough to lose the flow. if you're an arrested development fan, you'll enjoy just watching the obvious outline of cera and his dork amigo busting a groove under the opening credits. and nobody who grew up in the 70s will complain about the music. bootsy!

looking forward to seeing this movie again soon.

also saw The Brave One (jodie foster, terrence howard) yesterday. hadn't heard of it before i showed up at the theater, so it was a shock to find a basically pro-gun, anti-state movie driven by a character who's a fartsy caricature of the DNA composing your average NPR yutz. i'd say more, but it would just fuck it up if you happen to see it; talking about a couple of sections would ruin them. nothing beats going into a worthy movie with a clean canvas — only one reason i loathe trailers.

The Brave One punches with sometimes unsurpassed cinematic movement, along with obvious plot flaws and semi-gimmicks. many are deriding the movie with the usual "i liked it better when it was called _______" wankery (a super-sized disaster in that such formulaic preening's intended to indicate scorn for "lack of originality"), but it deserves a deeper look.
