The New Intellectuals?

Posted by Max Raskin at December 29, 2007 02:43 PM

A friend asked me whether the Mises scholars will become the new court intellectuals if Ron Paul wins.

I don't think so...Ron Paul wants to abolish the court!

oh sure, i get that maxella's talking about the general DC hydra, not the judiciary, but how about max puts something serious into the mix — like his life.

examine his language: "the Mises scholars". not merely "Mises scholars", but "the" — those immortal types who were... oh, that's right, they were chosen by the LvMI buddy squad. nothing more. and it's back to the sick delusion that the LRC/LvMI machine isn't just a club of those arbitrarily chosen and then elevated to "listen to me spew" status (by lew et al), whereby posts such as the one i'm discussing become not the embarrassing hero worship of an ignorant child, his competence overrun by eagerness and narcissism, nor the sort of casual tosser baloney you hear at any bar where two or more supposed voluntarists gather, but an item — a moment of note on a group blog where competition and pressure should be winnowing out the drivel.

it doesn't get winnowed out, however, because lew's management style is about as hands off as it gets. you become accepted into the fold, and he'll let you publish bullshit. i should know, since he never said anything to me about some of the outlandishly inappropriate dreck i put up on those pages. on the other hand, he did mention to me (and others involved in intramural argument) twice or so that he'd like the internal temperature to get reduced, and quick.

then, around 2003, it was a strange experiment with plenty to say in its favor. now the LRC machine is off its moorings, and there's rarely any voice encouraging proper restraint as the RP syringe gets passed around and nearly all take hits off it. this is important because it may be the permanent disintegration of what was a major base for liberty operations, however deep its faults. daily, LRC and LvMI continue toward a position of cato institute of the south, hijacking the message of liberty, in part by using the good will and reputation built up deservedly before lew decided to abandon his renunciation of the state and embrace it more fully than anyone could have predicted. why? because there's this hero/deity dude named ron paul — savior of the southland.

max raskin should ditch the caveat-filled language and go on record with a hard prediction — not "the" mises "scholars", which leaves upon a hedge that if they don't all go it wasn't "the Mises scholars", nor a vague indication of what ron paul "wants". make it material, max. make it something that can be referred to for testing. and then you should bet your life on it. if you're so sure of the supposed integrity of this obviously miswired career thief preaching "liberty", vow to kill yourself if he appoints x number of mises ministers to administration or similar DC whore positions. may as well, since you and apparently millions of others are willing to bet my life on the result of your pro-aggression rave.

he won't, even without the major commitment. better to keep up the cheers, continue to completely ignore the sound admonition of john acton (inapplicable to deity, apparently), and rah rah rah the LRC legacy into dirt (while claiming it holds a monopoly on liberty juice). and still, lew won't yank the keys out of his snot-nosed fist. such enthusiasm! how could one dampen it. 'twould be a crime. plus he's already bought 4 sets of pom-pons. do let the boy have his say; he does it so much better than anyone else could.

BTW, the dirty secret of LRC columnists and bloggers is that they regularly hear from competent writers who'd meet or exceed, if they felt like working for free (or paying).
